Weight Loss Surgery Facts

Morbid obesity is an issue that most people of our generation are well aware of. Morbid obesity cannot be combated by mere diets and exercise. This is a disease and it should be treated as one. A disease should have a solution that ends all the issues or at least puts a stop to the problems it heralds. This is where weight loss surgery has been a savior for those who have been living a half-life with morbid obesity. But signing up for weight loss surgery isn’t enough. A patient must have all the information they can use to make their surgery, recovery and results in a resounding success. Here are a few things that will help their purpose.

The right candidate

Patients who are overweight to the point where their wellbeing and health is threatened should opt for this surgery. Morbid obesity is classified as a person having a BMI of 40 or more. The candidate must also be aware that surgery alone won’t take care of the issue and their own participation in a having a healthy body is important. For this, a patient must have realistic goals and expectations.

Patient preparation before weight loss surgery

To ensure a good recovery and a good result from your procedures it is necessary for you to follow all of the advice offered to you by your surgeon.  You are likely to be asked to quit smoking, drinking and follow a healthy diet and exercise regime. They will also be advised to avoid certain blood thinning medications or supplements.

The Aftercare Advice

Your recovery and the results depend on how well you adhere to the advice and instructions of your doctor. Patients will be instructed on proper cleaning of the incision (if any) and the application of topical ointment for pain, if necessary. Patients should abstain from heavy exercise for about six weeks unless they are told otherwise. Patients are asked to come in for a one-week and a one-month follow-up to ensure proper healing. It is recommended that the patients use ice to the area for the first 48 hours, in combination with a specially designed topical anesthetic cream, and an oral medication as needed for the first 4 -5 days. Most of the pain is resolved by then.

After effects

Following your operation, you will not be able to drive for 24 hours. It is very helpful to have someone on hand to help you throughout these few days. Like after any other surgical procedure, the pain is variable from one patient to the next. You may feel sore for a few days but can resume your daily routine almost immediately. It is, however, advised to wait for a while before you begin any strenuous activities.

Results will last for

The final result will vary from person to person. But the gold standard answer is 2-3 months until a “final result” can be judged. Nonetheless, most patients will appreciate a very near final result in about half that time.
