Leadership is often redefined by individuals who devote their lives to a noble cause. One such leader is Hedley Lewis, the CEO of CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, whose career is rooted in purpose, resilience, and service. Recognized for his deep commitment to the non-profit and social impact sectors, Hedley’s journey reflects a belief that leadership is not about authority—it is about people, purpose, and progress.
From Humanitarian Halls to CHOC’s Heartbeat
Early in his career at the Vodacom Foundation, Hedley Lewis saw firsthand how partnerships can transform lives. That experience inspired his desire to lead organizations that deliver life-changing support to those who need it most.
Today, at CHOC, he applies the lessons of purpose-driven leadership: building strong teams, nurturing partnerships, and ensuring that every child and family facing cancer is supported with compassion and dignity.
Leadership Grounded in People and Purpose
Hedley’s leadership philosophy is inspired by the spirit of Sawubona—the Zulu greeting meaning “I see you.” For him, leadership is about acknowledging every individual, listening actively, and fostering trust.
He emphasizes that leaders don’t need all the answers but must ask the right questions and navigate challenges collectively. “True success,” he explains, “is built on trust, mutual respect, and continuous learning.”
CHOC’s Mission: Healing Beyond Medicine
Under Hedley’s visionary leadership, CHOC stands as a pillar of hope for children and teenagers battling cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Its mission extends beyond medical treatment—supporting families emotionally, socially, and practically.
With a strong national footprint and international partnerships—including WHO, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Childhood Cancer International—CHOC drives awareness, early detection, and comprehensive care across South Africa.
“It takes a village to treat a child—not just medically, but emotionally and practically,” Hedley emphasizes.
Stories of Courage: Xichavo’s Journey
Among the many children CHOC has supported, the story of Xichavo, a young boy diagnosed with osteosarcoma, stands out. After losing his mother, he became the head of a child-headed household, caring for his siblings while battling cancer.
At CHOC’s Diepkloof House, he found not just shelter, but a family. Supported by caregivers and social workers, he survived and now aspires to become a chartered accountant. “His story,” Hedley says, “is proof of what’s possible when care, dignity, and community are at the center.”
Building Bridges, Not Silos
For Hedley, partnerships are not optional—they are essential. CHOC collaborates with government, medical institutions, corporates, NGOs, and global partners to amplify impact. Whether through fundraising initiatives like The Cows, or grassroots awareness campaigns in rural communities, CHOC ensures that no child battles cancer alone.
Digital Transformation for Greater Impact
Recognizing the power of technology, Hedley has embraced digital platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok to share real stories, raise awareness, and promote early detection. “Technology isn’t just a tool—it’s a strategic enabler,” he says.
A Vision of Hope and Equity
Looking ahead, Hedley’s vision is bold: a South Africa where no child suffers in silence, and where early diagnosis and comprehensive care are accessible to all. His mission aligns with the global goal of raising childhood cancer survival rates to 60% by 2030.
“Our legacy must be one of equity, compassion, and relentless advocacy,” Hedley affirms. His leadership ensures that CHOC continues to be a beacon of hope, healing, and humanity for generations to come.
