If you ever watched a one-run lead evaporate because your starter hit yellow energy in the sixth, you already know Ranked 5 isn't a place for sentimental pitching decisions. Every lineup has somebody waiting to ambush a lazy fastball. Spending MLB 26 stubs on one shiny 99 OVR card won't save you if the seven arms behind him all do the same job. You need matchups ready before the warning track starts flashing.
Build For The Seventh Onward
Set your bullpen order before the game starts. Don't wait until a switch-hitter is already standing in the box with runners on. Your first call should cover the seventh, your cleanest setup arm handles the eighth, and your closer gets the ninth when possible. Keep three quality lefties available. That number matters against stacked pull-heavy lineups.
Velocity Alone Gets You Burned
On paper, the answer looks easy: load up on Outlier arms and throw heat until the game ends. Triple-digit fastballs still force instant decisions, especially up and in against same-handed hitters. But plenty of players turn every reliever into the same pitcher. They throw four-seamers in the same tunnel, chase strikeouts with two outs, then wonder why a 99 power bat turns on 102.
Game Update 14 changed the margin for error. Perfect-release PAR is smaller now, while the Bear Down quirk got a boost. That means control under pressure has more value than a bullpen card's radar-gun number. Use the Outlier fastball to steal the first strike. Then move the eye line: elevated heat, breaking ball below the zone, hard pitch on the edge. With Iglesias, let the slider and changeup do the dirty work. The velocity gap creates grounders when a punchout would be nice but a double-play ball is better.
Lefties Need Their Own Answer
A right-handed closer can still face lefties. That isn't the issue. The issue is bringing him in against three left-handed power bats because he's your highest-rated card. A hard-throwing southpaw with a cutter can attack inside, tie up extended PCI swings, and stop hitters from leaning over the outer third. Against a mixed pocket, use the righty fireballer. Against two dangerous lefties and a switch-hitter, spend the lefty. Fair enough.
Make The Call Before The Damage
Do you save Miller or Duran only for the ninth? Not if the opponent's best three hitters arrive in the seventh. Bring the weapon that fits the moment. If you still need a missing bullpen piece, cheap MLB The Show 26 Stubs can help finish the group, but check roles first. Start with three lefties, one Outlier closer, and Iglesias as your leverage bridge.
