Newer and newer hair treatment procedures and terminologies keep hitting the market, each more confusing than the previous one. While many new treatments sound promising, we still shy away from them fearing hair damage in some or the other way.
One of the most doubtful treatments among these is Keratin treatment. For all its advantages and disadvantages, and all the different kinds of doubts surrounding it, women find it hard to commit to it. While many of their concerns may be true, this subject is not without its misconceptions.
Therefore, we have compiled together a list of features, analyzing and clarifying all the points about getting a professional Keratin hair treatment by experts that one should be familiar with. Familiarizing oneself with all these features is just an attempt to help you make an informed choice, regardless of whether it’s a pro or con.
What is it?
A keratin treatment is a chemical process that aims to smoothen and shine frizzy hair. Effects of the treatment last up to six months give or take. There are many different versions of the treatment available in home beauty services in Dubai. A hairstylist will usually customize a blend of the different versions according to your hair type.
How does it work: Some versions of the treatment release formaldehyde when heated, but many newer versions, such as the “Rio” keratin treatment, has a formaldehyde-free approach?
No matter the formaldehyde content, on a basic level, keratin treatments dive into the hair follicle and inject porous areas with keratin. Keratin is an essential hair protein.
The length of time taken by a keratin hair treatment depends for different hair types, and also on the formula, or the blend of versions used by the stylist. So, all in all, you can expect any amount of time between 2 to 4 hours.
In this treatment, the hairstylist first washes your hair. After this, the hairstylist can adopt either of two approaches, either they will apply the keratin treatment to your wet hair and let the formula saturate each strand for about half an hour, or the hairstylist will blow-dry your hair first and then apply the treatment — again, it all depends on your hairstylist and your hair needs. Finally, they will go over any coarse strands with a flat iron on low to medium heat depending where the treatment needs to be sealed in.
Keratin treatment at Home:
You can do Keratin treatment at home by yourself, but treatments done by a non-professional may not have the same desired results. You can also avail the many home salon services in Dubai.
The most complicated step in performing keratin treatment yourself is buying the right product. Many hair products will contain the words ‘keratin’ as human hair is essentially made of keratin protein. Therefore, every product that says ‘Keratin’ may not necessarily be made for that treatment.
To get a better understanding of the right products to use, look at the list of instructions. If the instructions are extensive, detailing washing, drying and straightening, then the product is fit for a keratin treatment. If not, then chances are, you are holding a common conditioning product. So be careful of the product you buy.
Note that even if you buy the right keratin treatment product, you cannot hope to have exact salon-like results.
How safe is Keratin treatment?
As discussed above, some keratin treatments contain formaldehyde while some don’t. The ones that do are far more effective and long lasting, but also far more harmful, when compared to the ones that don’t. This is because formaldehyde is a carcinogen, meaning it’s a cancerous substance, and therefore should be avoided.
Note that keratin treatment is a strict no-no for pregnant women.
Keratin treatment post hair coloring:
Many people feel that Keratin treatment can’t be done after hair coloring. Well, it’s a myth.
It is completely safe to get hair keratin treatment by experts, after hair coloring. If you’re still worried about hair damage, reduce shampooing hair to twice or thrice a week. Make sure to use a shampoo that is sulphate-free, and avoid salt-based hair sprays.
